Crossing Texas

We made it to Terrell, TX on the first night and thanks to a travel coupon from Ann O'brien, got a great deal on a room at a La Quinta. We were in good shape for navigating through Dallas/Ft.Worth the next morning. Even though it is interminably long, there is something i really love about the drive through West Texas. The sky takes up about 80% of the view. The land about 18% and the rest is humanity, in check. Also you have a good excuse to stop at Dairy Queen for soft serve at least once in the day. By the time we reached Amarillo there was some discussion about how far we wanted to travel the rest of the afternoon/evening. Everyone seemed to think we should drive all the way in to Crestone. Knowing that we were Colorado bound and would not be going through Albuquerque to shop REI prior to heading up to Crestone, we decided to cut north shortly after Amarillo on HWY 385 that runs up to Dalhart and Texline and then over into the corner of New Mexico. This is my favorite stretch of Texas. There are wonderful canyonlands and sage, juniper and cedar greening the view. And once you hit New Mexico, the drive from Clayton to Raton is absolutely idyllic--green, green grasslands, foothills and mountains, and light magic spilling across it all. We recommend this route for those of you who are travelling direct from LA to CO and want to make it in the shortest amount of time. If, however, you have more time and the inclination, the drive up from Santa Fe and Taos is equally beautiful, and if you overnight there, there are wonderful restaurants and shops and sights to absorb all along the way.
