Too Close for Comfort

With strong relentless winds, gusting between 30-70 miles per hour, a dangerous fire broke out a few miles to the east of the School today. Local firefighters were on the scene by 11 am (about when I took this picture) and worked bravely to contain the fire. Around 4:30 additional support arrived from other areas in the San Luis Valley. The fire has diminished but was a jarring reminder of how desperately we need precipitation. Snow is predicted tonight and tomorrow. The fire crews will remain for two days to ensure the fire is out. Apparently a ditch was being mowed and the tractor blade hit a rock---because the area is so very dry this was all it took to spark the brush and start a fire. Rain. Snow. We need it. And a break from the wind.
