Meet a Few Angels

LINK is the highschool component of the Charter School program. Here is teacher and charter school founder, Karen Aker, assistant teacher Thomas Cleary, and students Elise and Maxey, in back of one of the vans the entire group will be traveling in to Louisiana March 25th-March 31st. This morning they were prepping for snowboarding up at Monarch (hence the interesting gear) and I snapped a quick pic to give you a preview of part of the group Finn and I will be traveling with to New Orleans, Slidell, Abita Springs, and Waveland. The entire school community has collected over 3,000 books to donate to Brock Elementary of Slidell (see Nov. archives for pics and more details) as they begin to rebuild their library collection lost to Hurricane Katrina. We will also tour areas of historic and devastated New Orleans with Jay's uncle Merv Moreheiser(Corps of Engineers), catch a rehearsal of the interacial choir "Shades of Praise" recently featured on NPR (Ilene's group), eat at Tujacues in the Quarter and do a service project at a Senior Center in downtown NOLA through connection with our good friend and Hope Advocate, Phyllis Cassidy of Goodwork Network. We will be sheltered in the homes of Margaret and Jerry Brady, Jonathon and Coleen Davis, and Ilene Alexander and David Billesbach--linking my old and new communities in compassionate generosity.

13 students will travel with 3 video cameras filming an ongoing log of their adventure, experiences, and shared stories from people they will be meeting throughout the area. After leaving the Gulf South they will travel on to Washington DC where among many tours and sightseeings, they will meet with their local Congressmen and practice a little political advocacy, speaking for who and what they have seen in Louisiana. Plans are still shaping up and we will be posting daily from the trip so stayed tuned. The blog will see renewned action the last week of March.

Many friends of this blog have expressed interest in helping this student-driven relief effort and service-learning experience. The blog is a great way to communicate your support. Post comments, we read them, we feel SUPPORTED by your input and interaction. Cash donations will also help pay for shipping costs of the Books to Brock, and shelving materials that Thomas and the students are constructing for each classroom, and travel expenses. If you are interested in helping that way send me a check and we'll put it to good use and sing your praises on this cross-country odyssey and beyond.

This trip is comming about through the hard work of Karen Acker (teacher at the LINK (HS) program of the Crestone Charter SChool in Crestone CO)and the incredible support of Kathryn. It was inspirted by Charlie Warren, MS teacher, but when it was determine that such a trip would be too much for his class (grades 5-8) LINK redoubled it effort to make sure the trip happened, and the MS focused on the book drive. The LINK students continue to raise money (and unfortunately will need to do so after the trip) and are very excited but a little nervous to depart in just under two weeks!
Thanks Kathryn, we could not have done it without you!
